Advent is the time that the Church prepares for the celebration of the birth of Jesus. Leading up to Christmas, we take the time to focus on the values and promises that can be found in Jesus Christ. Last Sunday, we lit the candle of joy.
This candle reflects the joy that comes through the arrival of Jesus and through the salvation he has gifted us. During a time where depression is at an all-time high and so many people live in despair, this candle offers a bright light during a dark time. Biblical joy goes far beyond momentary happiness like the thrill a child might experience when they unwrap a gift on Christmas day. Biblical joy is an enduring, perpetual happiness that cannot be deterred by present circumstances. This does not mean that we never experience sadness or pain, just that there is an underlying peace that steadies us through the ups and downs of life. This type of foundational joy comes from God alone.
Joy can often be found when a person spends time with God. Whether it be in service to others, peaceful prayer, joyful worship, or restful Sabbath, the joy of God is always there, ready for us to tap in and experience it. The more we practice tuning in to the joy of God, the more natural it becomes and the easier it is fall back on when times get tough.
Our joy isn’t dependent on what is going on in our life or in our world. Our joy doesn’t come from our jobs, our finances, or our success. Our joy doesn’t come from the things that we have on earth. It doesn’t depend on the gifts we give or the gifts we find under the tree. No earthly thing can ever give us complete joy. Our joy comes from God. Our joy is found in living the way Jesus taught us to live, with love and forgiveness.
